ipc - Illinois Poison Center

The Illinois Poison Center needs your help. The center will close July 1, 2014, which means it will be the only state without a poison center.

ipc - Illinois Poison CenterThere are 57 Poison Centers across the country…not one National center. When one places a call to the poison center, the caller’s phone number tells the system where to filter that call, as not all states have a poison center. That said, states pay their share to the states that do have the centers.  However, Illinois hosts their own Poison Center.

The Illinois Poison Center is the nation’s oldest poison center and it simply doesn’t have the funding needed to keep running. There’s a solution to the problem, called the “2 Cent Solution.”  That said, they need support in getting their legislature to understand how important it is to consumers to keep the center running.

Have you any idea how detrimental this could be to residents if they close the Illinois Poison Center? It’s estimated that 80,000 calls are answered by the Illinois Poison Center. If you found yourself in a situation where you accidentally took the wrong prescription med or your child did something like my daughter and her friend did…where would you turn? Even doctors and hospitals utilize the Poison Centers.

LESlabs thyroid support

Thyroid-Support LES-LabsVitamins, minerals and many other nutrients are needed by the body for it to function optimally.  One gland that often requires special attention is the thyroid gland.  That gland plays an important role in how the metabolism functions, how one grows, how one can feel overall, and more.  That said, many of us don’t get what we need in our diets to keep our thyroid functioning optimally and I am sure that I am one of those people who fall into that category.

How to Save on Beef Roasts

Can’t Afford Beef Roasts? Use this Cut for a lot of Savings

Our family is beefeaters.  Steak, hamburger, beef roasts, steak tips – beef – we just love beef.  Unfortunately though, with the cost of beef rising so fast, the only thing that I could make stretch for a meal was burger.  We stopped having steak once a week and roasts became a rarity.  Then I learned of an awesome tip and want to share that with you!

Update on McKenzie Lowe – FDA Approved the Experimental Cancer Treatment!

Congratulations to the Lowe family for winning the battle against the FDA in getting them to approve the only option left to keep McKenzie alive.  If you didn’t read the first article on McKenzie’s battle with the FDA – you can read it here.

And many thanks readers for your support.  For signing the petition.  For helping 12-year old McKenzie and her family fight a battle that gives McKenzie the only chance left to survive.

But their fight doesn’t end there.  Now the fight is trying to find a local doctor to work with the FDA.  This isn’t an easy task as the antineoplaston treatment (ANP) is very controversial.  It also requires the doctor to fill out a 200 page FDA application as part of the compassion exemption process.

McKenzie Lowe

It’s all so mind-boggling that one has to go through so much with so little time to spare. I was so excited to hear the news and very disappointed to learn of the hurdle they are now faced with.

When I hear something, I will update you on the status of McKenzie’s journey.  You can also follow Friends of McKenzie Lowe’s Facebook page for updates.

Baking Soda is fairly cheap.  I buy the large bags at Sam’s Club to use in the cat’s litter boxes (it really does help).  That said, there are so many other uses for baking soda – take a look:

1. To put out a grease fire, scatter baking soda over it by the handful to extinguish flames.
2. Clean the dishwasher and coffeemaker by running an empty cycle with baking soda.
3. Add ½ cup baking soda to your bath for an at-home spa treatment.
4. Polish jewelry with a paste made of water and baking soda. It’s safe on both silver and gold.
5. Scatter baking soda in the kitty box, then add litter on top to keep smells to a minimum. Or make a DIY litter, mixing a small box of baking soda with 3 inches of sandy clay. Continue reading »
