Susie’s Hope Review & Giveaway – Based on a True Story

Susie's Hope review

Okay, so when I was asked if I’d like to review Susie’s Hope DVD – a movie based on a true story of unfathomable animal abuse – I hemmed and hawed.

You see, as I began to read what the movie was about I just didn’t know if I could bring myself to watch this movie. I just didn’t think I could do it. We weren’t put on this earth to be abused and neither were animals. Though, as I continued to read about the movie in the pitch letter, I felt compelled to watch it. I felt that I needed to see it and share with anyone and everyone the mission Donna accomplished in helping this abused animal and many others despite her devastating encounter with a pit bull. All of us can do our share in preventing animal abuse.

That said, it was a given that I’d ball my eyes out before the movie was over. I’m a huge animal lover and I cannot fathom the thought of any type of animal abuse – even though I know it’s all around us just as humans are abused day in and day out. I just don’t understand how anyone could hurt a living being – human or animal. It makes me sick inside to think of this happening in our world.

The sad thing is – animals have no voice, unlike us humans. We have to be their advocates. There are many laws in place for hurting humans – not so many for animals. And if there are laws in place – many aren’t as strong as they should be. This is where Susie’s Hope sends a huge message to the world. Us humans can change the way animals are treated – how the abuser pays his dues for being so cruel.

About the movie

Based on the true story that successfully passed Susie’s Law in North Carolina, which seeks stricter punishment for animal abusers, Susie’s Hope brings to life the inspirational relationship between pit bull attack survivor Donna Lawrence and Susie, a pit bull-mix puppy found beaten, burned and left for dead. Recognizing reflect and abuse were to blame for the tragic attack that nearly claimed her life 10 months earlier, Donna resumes the battered animal and accepts her as family. Together, they learn to heal, love and forgive as they lead a historic effort to seek justice and protection, not only for Susie, but all animals. Starring Emmanuelle Vaguer (40 Days and 40 Nights), Burgess Jenkins (Remember The Titans) and Andrea Powell (Ender’s Game, The Twighlight: Breaking Dawn Saga: Part 2), Susie’s Hope is an incredible story of love, loss and redemption.

Can you see from reading about the movie how hard it could be for someone who loves animals to watch it? Seriously – an animal left for dead that has been found beaten and burned? Personally, I’d love to have the punishment for the abuser to be abused the same way they abused the animal – that would work well for me – but that don’t even happen for hurting humans, so it’s not going to happen to those who abuse animals.

So my daughter and I set out to watch Susie’s Hope, and yes, I could not help myself from crying at the beginning, in the middle, and at the end. Some of the crying was from seeing how this helpless animal struggled. Some of the crying was from how the animal and and it’s rescuer were being torn apart. But in the end – the tears – those were tears of joy.

Joy that what once the abuser wasn’t going to be convicted of his crime – ended up being convicted due to another human voice speaking up. And more tears of joy that the dog’s rescuer won a feat to protect animals from being abused now called Susie’s Law.

Susie’s Law – a new law was born to protect animals from abuse where the abuser receives stricter penalties.

About Susie:

Susie was found nearly dead in Greenfield Park in Greensboro, North Carolina on August 20, 2009. Just a puppy, Susie had licked the face of her owner’s newborn baby. Her owner became violent—she was beaten so severely her jaw was broken. That wasn’t enough, though. She was then set on fire and left for dead. Incredibly and against all odds Susie survived. Donna Lawrence adopted her two months later. Susie is now a trained therapy dog and event won the American Humane Association’s American Hero Dog this year!

And Susie – she has been recognized with the Dog Hero Award:

Donna continues to be on a mission to help these abused animals. But she’s come to do more than that – there is now a Susie’s Hope Foundation with a mission that is just what the world needs:

It is the mission of Susie’s Hope™, a nonprofit organization, to foster awareness of the animal abuse that exists in our nation and to work to end this epidemic by providing education to people of all ages.

Chicken Soup for the Soul – The Dog Did What? 2nd Edition

the dog did what

Dog lovers will appreciate Chicken Soup for the Soul The Dog Did What? – 2nd Edition. A book compiled of 101 Amazing Stories from dog owners that just had to share what their best friend did.

Recently, I could have created an entry in this book.  Our wonderful dog, Gracie, decided that she was going to be a bad dog.  She ate the top of my daughter’s friend’s winter boot that was visiting us.  She hadn’t done something like that in years.  She was a very naughty dog and she knew it when she was scolded.  Why she did this – I don’t know -if she could only speak.

You’ll find stories in this edition that speak of bad dogs.  Dogs that have taught people things. Dogs that did things that were on the frisky side, and so many more stories.

I enjoyed reading Chicken Soup for the Soul – The Dog Did What? 2nd Edition book, featuring dogs.  Simply filled with short stories that are easy to read even for those who get interrupted a gazillion times a day. Stories that keep you wanting to read more.

You can find this book on There’s a paperback version and a Kindle version.

Chicken soup for the soul dry cat food

chicken soup for the soul dry cat food

Our fur babies were blessed with being sent a bag of Chicken Soup for the Soul Dry Cat food to help facilitate this review.  In which – all 13 give it a rating of a five!

The box arrived and I opened it. That was a mistake on my part.  I should have put it where it belongs or at the very least – closed the box back up.  It wasn’t long after that that Possum decided she was going to tear the bag open!

The next thing I saw was food on the floor and another cat helping themselves to it (not sure of which black cat – we have 5 black cats).

Needless to say, I guess you might say this cat food must be good if they’re into it before it makes it to their food bowls.  In fact, they liked this food so much that they devoured the entire bag in less than a week.

There wasn’t one out of the thirteen cats that did not like this food.  That tells me a lot since a couple of these kids of ours are picky eaters.  And frankly, it’s no savings in my pocket if they won’t eat the food I’ve bought.

It’s nice to know that the company gives back to the animals (and people) in need – here’s a couple tidbits to ponder over:

Because it’s important to give back, we use adopted pets as our models…
A number of us at Chicken Soup for the Soul have adopted animals from shelters. So, when it came time to shoot the photos for our new pet food packaging, we had an idea. Instead of paying for “professional” pet models, we donated money to a local shelter and featured some of their cats and dogs, ones that had recently found their “forever homes.” On the back of each package, you can read about the rescue dog or cat pictured on the front.

Because we use all our products to give back to animals and people too…
Improving the world around us is part of Chicken Soup for the Soul’s mission of sharing happiness, inspiration and wellness through everything they do. Today we focus our philanthropic activities on the Humpty Dumpty Institute, our charitable partner. We collaborate with the Humpty Dumpty Institute on a number of initiatives related to literacy, hunger and animals. A portion of all Chicken Soup for the Soul sales goes to Humpty Dumpty to support its work.

dog cupcake costume

Our friends at Costume Super Center gave us the opportunity to experience a dog costume for Gracie.  We opted for the Cupcake Girl costume simply because cupcakes are the craze with the girls these days and we wanted her to feel like she was part of that craze.

We were all too excited to get the costume and once it arrived we tried it on her.  Being a larger dog, the costume fit, but didn’t look right with the fur coat that she had that was thicker than thick.  So, we made her an appointment to get groomed and shaved down, and then tried the costume again.  We know that Gracie will never be the The original California Gurl,  but she can be the Beauteous Cupcake Girl!

About the Cupcake Girl Costume

This pet costume is so adorable.  The blue hair has openings where the ears pull through the wig – keeping the wig in place.  We thought the wig’s quality is comparable to what a Halloween costume for a human is.  There was plenty of stretch to the cupcake piece.  That piece is made of a silky material making it easy to get on.  The glasses compose of a quality material and has a strap to hold them on.  In my mind, where we have never purchased a costume before; I had this notion that the costume would be more on the low quality side.  That was far from the case.  I was very pleased with its quality.

What?  No Picture of Gracie wearing it?!  Here’s why…

gracie shepherd mix groomed 6-14

After getting Gracie beautified we went to put the costume on her again – that didn’t go over well with her at all.   Mind you, we haven’t had issues in the past with dressing her up in all kinds of clothing and accessories, but this time – it was very different.  Before we could even get the wig on the way it should be on – she showed her teeth to us.

And that would be why you can’t see Gracie all dolled up as a Cupcake Girl 🙁  We don’t know what the issue was with her not letting us put it on – I just know that I wasn’t going to force it on her where she showed her teeth.  A dog showing their teeth makes me very nervous whether it be her, or another dog.

About Costume Super Center

Costume Super Center carries costumes for adults, children, pets (dogs and cats) and a line of Mascot costumes.  They have all the accessories that are needed to make a costume complete.  All their costumes are priced decently.  We did a review of a Jester Costume a few years back, and were very pleased with that costume as well and the service we received.

Mr. Mu

Somewhere along the line, I signed up to receive Greenies’ new SmartBites to test drive on my fur babies.   I had completely forgot I had done this and when this box arrived with a Greenies’ label – I was like what?  It actually sat on my table because I was on a semi-vacation where I literally was in and out of the house – mostly out :).

The time came where I opened the box.  Look what the fur babies received:

Greenies smartbites

I was thrilled that Greenies was so generous in sending the amount of packages they did. With 15 cats, I would’ve felt really bad if someone got left out of being able to try them. Thank You Greenies 🙂

I guess now is a good time as any to introduce you to Mr. Mu.  Mr. Mu is 5yo, has the personality of 10 cats, thinks he’s all that and more, and at times loves to strut his stuff with an attitude to simply intimidate the other cats.  I can always tell by the look on his face that he’s up to no good.
