horned pout

Well, it sort of is in the air.  Daylight savings signifies that we will have days with longer daylight hours but Mother Nature doesn’t quite agree in New England that it means springtime.  Regardless, I get very excited when daylight savings occurs in the spring even though we still have snowstorms.  Warmer days will appear shortly, melting all the snow and warming up the air, and then come the end of April, I will go digging in my compost pile for worms and head out fishing.

Sink full of horned pout

I love to fish but only for trout and horned pout.  Horned pouting is actually my favorite of the two.  As you can see from the picture – I have no problem catching horned pout.  That type of fishing is done in the darkness of the night.  They tend to start biting shortly after dusk sets in and will bit all through the night.

Trout fishing is only allowed from dawn to dusk where I live.  I kind of have a case of the butt with trout these days.  It seems as though that they simply don’t want to let me catch them.  The past two years – I didn’t catch a one!  This year though, that is going to change – it has to!  I can’t let my fifteen year old outdo her mother another year.  That just can’t happen.

Since daylight savings time has happened once again, I thought I would take the opportunity to ask you if it is time to replace your smoke/CO2 detectors.  Did you know that it is recommended that one replace their smoke/CO2 (carbon dioxide) detectors every 10 years?  It’s also recommended that one change the batteries in all their detectors twice a year.  An easy way to remember as to when to change the batteries,  is change them when daylight savings time occur – in the spring and the fall.

Smoke/CO2 Detectors
{The detector shown above is the Kidde KN-COSM-XTR-B Nighthawk Combination Carbon Monoxide, Fire, and Smoke Intelligent Alarm – it TALKS!}  I had to throw the link in there in case you wanted to check it out 🙂

How to Convert Recipes for the Slow Cooker

There are just a few simple steps to consider when you want to convert recipes for the slow cooker that you’d traditionally would cook on your stovetop or in the oven.

In order to convert a recipe for slow cooker cooking the recipe has to contain some type of liquid – water, broth, wine, canned soup, or a sauce.

Steps:

  • Cut the amount of liquid in half
  • Calculate the cooking time based on – One (1) hour in the oven equals eight (8) hours on low in the slow cooker or four (4) hours on high.

When nearing the time of the dish being done:

  • If you think there is too much liquid – remove the cover and turn the slow cooker up to high.
  • If you want to make or add a sauce, add sour cream, or cheese – now would be the time to do it.

Did you know?

  • A slow cooker’s low heat setting is approx. 200° F (95° C)
  • A slow cooker’s high heat setting  is approx. 300° F (150°C)
  • Frozen meat can go right from the freezer to the slow cooker.  Just remember to increase the cooking time.  The reason for browning meats is to seal in flavor and give the meat a more appetizing look after it’s done cooking – something that I never do (shame on me, but I’m totally okay with not doing it).  Personally, I can’t be bothered with browning my meats.
  • Tougher cuts of meat come out really tender in the slow cooker, such as beef stew meat and tougher steaks (use in stroganoffs or even beef stew).

Do you like to use a slow cooker?  What is your favorite dish to make?

easter lily

Can you believe Easter is at the end of March this year?  Yep, Easter is March 31st – I just learned this and I am so far from being prepared!  Years ago, Easter wasn’t celebrated until the end of April…always.  Over the years though the day has gradually moved closer to the beginning of April and now it’s into March.  How is that?  Regardless, I will need to shop for an Easter outfit for a couple of family members.

That’s right!  I snagged a printer for $47.83.

We all know there’s absolutely nothing I love more than getting a great deal.  Well, I just have to tell you about the latest deal I snagged!  I was able to snag  myself a $149.99 all-in-one printer/scanner/fax for less than $40 at Staples.  There were several factors as to why I ended up shopping Staples.com over another site.  These factors were – I knew I could utilize a cash back site, I knew I could hit a sale, and I knew I could get free shipping.  I was hoping to find an online coupon code but couldn’t – so I resorted to Ebay for a coupon.
