There you have it. Above is the Derma Roller System – a micro-needling technique used by Hollywood Stars. I was thrilled with the opportunity of being able to try this system out and share my thoughts on it.
I’ve said it before, I’m aging, and I just don’t like it. Though I’ve never abused my skin, I can see the difference in the tone of my skin, opposed to what it used to be 10 years ago. I’m beginning to notice discolorations that weren’t there a year ago. Those bother me just as much as the fine lines do.
I’ve began using Hyaluronic Acid Serums to help with keeping the aging process at bay, as much as I can, about a year ago. Now, I’ve added the Derma Roller System to my skin routine.
The Derma Roller System I’ve been using is offered in five different needle sizes ranging from .5mm to 2.5mm. Each of these needle sizes are used for treating different areas of the body.
When making the selection as to which one I wanted to try – I thought long and hard. I wanted one that would be able to numerous areas of the body in the event that I wanted to try an area other than my face. That said, I didn’t want any hair regrowth happening as it’s bad enough as a woman loses estrogen as they age that hair growth gets to be a nuisance on the face. So in looking at the chart above, also found on the Derma Roller System website, I decided to try the 1.0mm roller.
Using the Derma Roller is extremely simple and does not take a lot of time out of your day – from prep to completion – ten (10) minutes max is what was needed to complete a facial treatment. Please note – I did not use the Peptide Mask. I confirmed with the company that the mask was not necessary, but was informed one will get better results using it.
How to use the Derma Roller System:
I’ve included the instructions you’ll find on their website – I wanted to leave no room for err.
Preparation:
Before you begin using the Derma Roller System, wash and dry your hands and the area to be treated with soap and water thoroughly. Clean your treatment table with disinfectant and then prepare the following items:
- Derma Roller System with needle lengths of 0.5mm or 1.0mm (included)
- Peptide Mask (available at your local pharmacy)
- Clean towel
- Sunscreen/Sunblock
- Half a glass of disinfectant: rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide (only – required once per week/treatment)
How to Apply:
1. Roll the Derma Roller gently over the area you wish to treat 4 times vertically, 4 times horizontally, 4 times diagonally to the left and 4 times diagonally to the right (as illustrated below). This is more than enough to stimulate collagen and elastin formation in the skin. Avoid using the Derma Roller on your eyelids or lips.
2. Place one sheet of Peptide Mask on your face and leave the mask on for 10 minutes.
3. Daytime treatment only – if you are using the Derma Roller System in the daytime, apply sun protective cream to the face and neck after removing the Peptide Mask.
4. Treat only once per day, up to 5 times per week when using the Derma Roller System 0.5mm. If you’re using the 1.0mm system, treat only once every 3 to 4 weeks.
Cleaning the Derma Roller
I cannot express enough how important it is to start with a clean slate before using the roller and the after care of the roller itself. It’s a hygiene product – one that should not be shared with others. After using it should be washed with hot water. Once a week, the head should be cleaned with rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide for 30 minutes, in a cup 1/2 full of the disinfectant of choice. Remove from the cup, shake it, then lie it on its side to dry. Once dry – place it back in its case.
My Findings:
As you can see, the system is extremely easy to use. I mastered it the first time I used it. I can’t give you before and after pictures, as they would be misleading you. I have a regimen that I follow nightly, using a Hyaluronic Acid Serum and restorative cream.
That said, I can tell you this:
1. You will need to figure out how much pressure to use when doing the treatment. My first shot at it – left a few places bleeding. Now – you must remember that everyone’s skin is different – and just because I had this issue – doesn’t mean you will. And, who knows – maybe I was being a bit too aggressive with the roller…so I would suggest starting out gently/lightly when rolling.
2. Doing the treatment will leave your face red and maybe even feel like it’s stinging (that was my experience). The redness will go away in a few hours as will the stinging. My suggestion is to use the Derma Roller System at night before bed.
3. I did find that hair growth was happening at a faster rate after the 5th use. And why this would be – I have no idea but wanted to point this out. For all I know it could be a coincidence due to my age and menopausal state. I use Nair (facial) and find that I need to use it a bit more often. I do not like this part, but I can live with it…I want the wrinkles/fine lines gone!
4. A long time ago I had read that one should use a Vit. C serum after a treatment like this – so I opted to continue using the Hyaluronic Acid serum after each treatment. I had no adverse affects in doing so.
I will continue to use the Derma Roller System. Nothing is going to work over-night, so being realistic in giving the product a chance to work, seems to makes sense to me. Over time I will continue to lose the key ingredients that keep the skin supple, and if by chance using the Derma Roller System will help that cause – I’m not giving it up.
Updating this post to say – after using this product for a few weeks – I noticed that there were little blood vessels that appeared on my cheeks. I thought after stopping the treatment that I would see my cheeks go back to normal – but they didn’t. I have stopped using the product and will not be using another.
