I had no intentions of being a mom who cut their kids’ hair, but it happened to be that I had no other choice after my son had brain surgery at 3 and 7 weeks of age. The first surgery was to remove a mass on the ventricle in the brain…but he hemorrhaged severely before they could remove it all. The second surgery was for an intra-cranial shunt placement, which is what was supposed to happen the first time around. Needless to say, between the two surgeries, he was left with very low muscle tone and couldn’t hold his head up. In addition, he was hypersensitive to having his head touched. So how was I ever gonna get his hair cut? I could barely touch his head to wash his hair.
Working with his pediatrician, I was given a prescription for choral hydrate, which is a sedative. I would give him a dose of choral hydrate, wait for him to go to sleep, and then cut his hair while he was in his crib. I would cut one side and then flip his head over to do the other side and pray that they came out even! I cut his hair this way for many many years.
As he got older, he gained more head control and became much less sensitive to having his head touched. That’s when I decided I wanted to invest in a cheap set of hair clippers to see how he would tolerate them. I worried he may not like the vibration sensation they make or the noise. I put his favorite show on…Barney and began clipping away. This helped a lot as the show diverted his attention a bit from me cutting his hair. I was so pleased that he took to them; however, not without him moving his head here, there and everywhere…but that was okay, I could work with that. Of course, I didn’t want the scars from the surgeries showing through, so I was real careful to choose an attachment that was a bit longer, which is suggested until you get used to how short the short attachments really can be! I would also cut the front of his hair with scissors as I didn’t want a whiffle cut (not the style when he was younger).
Cutting hair with clippers is very easy and some brands will include a video. I have owned several pair of clippers over the years and I don’t buy the expensive ones. I probably wouldn’t have owned as many as I have, if only I had read the directions and oiled them like I should have! Regardless, I have saved myself a ton of money, solved a problem before it became one (which was I had no wheelchair transportation for him for many years, and the one van we had for a few years died a few years ago…so there’s no taking him out to get beatified now) and I gained knowledge in cutting hair. Now all the men in the family come to me to get their haircut. I even trim beards, eyebrows and mustaches!
As for my daughter…it’s easy enough to taper bangs, to taper the back of the hair, to cut it short, and even thin out the bangs for a different look with hair thinners. I actually will thin out the top of my son’s hair too, as he has very thick hair. Women…you would die for his hair! It’s thick and when it grows out…it gets these nice soft waves throughout…I pay a lot of money for those waves! His hair wasn’t always wavy though…that part didn’t come about until he went through puberty and surely not a trait from me!
So, if you’ve ever thought about cutting your family’s hair and haven’t yet…give it a try! You may surprise yourself and be a natural. You can save yourself a lot of money and a lot of time not running to the salon or barbers. As for yourself…go ahead…go to the salon! You deserve that special treatment 🙂
To give you an idea of what I would buy if I were on the hunt for a new set of clippers:

The set on the right is color-coded but doesn’t come with the barber comb (nice for someone like me who can’t see anything these days w/o magnifiers). Each comes with a cape (which you’ll want), a nice case and a 4-star rating. Don’t be intimidated by all the different attachments…some you may never use but it’s really good to have them in the event you may need them.

When I have to make a long distance call…I don’t use my landline. I use my cell phone for the mere fact that I don’t want to pay for long distance on my landline when I really don’t use it that often…thus, the call is made on the cell. However, during peak hours a long distant call means taking away from my minutes which happen to be shared by 4 other family members. I hate having to listen to this menu and then that menu just to get to a human!
Needless to say, I have learned many ways to get around these recordings to get to a human, but have discovered a list that goes into further detail for many of the major companies….so I thought I would share it with you. Here’s the link: http://www.dialahuman.com/
I am bookmarking it….never to be deleted!
Hope all you mother’s had a fantastic Mother’s Day,
There are many reasons as to why one would be in need of a costume…maybe for a play, a themed party, or Halloween. If you happen to find yourself in need of one, I would like to suggest that you check out costumesupercenter.com.
I was given the opportunity to try a costume for myself. I chose the Kings Jester Adult Costume. The costume consists of a multi-colored long-sleeved tunic and a two-colored jester’s hat. After ordering this particular costume, I wondered if I would have a problem with the hat. I worried it may not stand up on my head without collapsing. Well…I worried for no reason. The hat is constructed of a foam which is sturdy enough to stand up while on the head, but not too heavy where it collapses. The pompoms on the tips of the hat are light enough that they didn’t weigh the tips down. The picture off to the right above (taken from their website), shows the jester’s hat with a red and yellow pompom however, the jester’s hat I received had two green pompoms…regardless, talk about cute…that it is! The tunic, itself, is constructed out of a polyester fabric and flows nicely on the body and down the arms. The tunic is full enough to be worn by an adult size XS- LG. An adult who wears an XS may need to wear a belt, sash or tie, at the waist in order to create the balloon effect of the upper half of the costume. Both, the hat and tunic fabrics are of vibrant colors that match to a tee. I was pleased with the construction of the costume, as well.
Costume Supercenter is a one-stop shop for your costume needs. They carry costumes for women, teens, funny costumes, infants and toddler costumes, plus size, and even sexy costumes. Should Fido need costume…check out their selection! One can find a multitude of accessories including…wigs, paints, shoes, stockings and masks…to name a few, on their website as well.
*Disclaimer: I was given a costume in exchange for a product review. All opinions are my own.
Then reality then began to set in. In a few short weeks, I would be attending my graduation. I was dreading the heat of the hot summer day; yet was very excited, that I would no longer have to go to school…no more homework! The diploma I worked so very hard for would be in my hands and I could now work full time at the teller job I had obtained as a freshman…(what was I thinking…work full time!). College wasn’t a topic in our home…we didn’t have the money and the programs that exist today, didn’t exists back then.
Of course, all Grads want a Graduation Party, and I was no different. The thing about these parties though is all graduates want one and you all graduate on the same day, at the same time…so how do you get to attend your friend’s parties? Doesn’t happen where you can be there for the gifts, the cake, and the entire celebration. The best you can do is share pictures of that day. That’s it…now you’re done with celebrating and moving on in the adult world…nothing will ever be the same as the past 18 years of your life.
So I sit here now and think…in five short years, my daughter will be graduating. My son graduated in 2005…but since he has severe handicaps and didn’t know what graduation was all about; I didn’t do for him what my daughter will expect or what I will want for her.
I can start planning now though. I can think about what my options are for the little details like the invites, the photo books, the thank you notes (yes, she has to write hand written thank you notes…none of this Internet technology!). In addition, I refuse to pay a photographer $1000 for graduation pictures for everyone. I will have a small set done and then get them reprinted for others. Therefore, I’ve been searching the Internet to see what sites are friendly for accommodating all my needs.
I’ve come up with a site that can provide me with everything I would need…Tiny Prints.
Tiny Prints provides stylish, modern and unique graduation stationery including graduation announcements, graduation invitations, and thank you cards for teens. When graduation season has come and gone Tiny Prints will still be here to fill all your stationery needs with their exclusive designs from the nation’s top designers. Come try the easy card personalization, powerful preview engine and top-notch customer service and paper quality for yourself! With Tiny Prints by your side commemorating every holiday and momentous occasion is a cinch!
So…good enough, I revamped my day while moaning about it over my coffee. I then did what I needed for my son, my brother and his girlfriend stopped by, and then my in laws stopped over. I was cleaning up the dinner mess and thought about taking a nap. That is exactly what I should have done! Instead I asked my FIL if he wanted to go throw our lines in the brook in the center of town.
Off we go…dog is not happy…she couldn’t go. We thought about stopping down at the bottom of the hill where I live…but I had no sneakers on and we would have had to walk through the woods and under the bridge…decided that wasn’t happening. So…off we went to our original destination. Mind you this place is not wooded per se, but has woody areas on the other side of the bridge and surrounding the pond in other directions. We set ourselves up right out in the open…no woods near us. We were watching fish jump left and right…clear out of the water…waiting for one to take our line…happening? Not. We keep trying, though.
Then, Ma calls Pa and said she wanted to leave at 9pm. Good enough…Pa told her to pick him up. We sit there trying to get them stupid fish to take our hooks….patiently waiting…I am watching my bobber and nothing. Then for whatever reason….I looked down to the left of my left shoe and what is slithering not a foot and a half away?
Yup…you guessed it! A snake…at least two feet long and as round as a half dollar and black in color. I screamed my head off…scared Pa to death. He gets up and stands behind me and says, “I don’t like snakes.” Well, neither do I obviously. We stood there to see what the snake was going to do. I would’ve gotten my cell to take a pic of this snake…but I wasn’t moving for anything. Finally, the snake turned around and went back towards the bridge. Thank God! I honestly am surprised I didn’t piss my pants! My heart was beating a hundred miles an hour, and Pa surely wasn’t gonna protect me, should that snake had decided to go south. That was it…fishing was over….we packed up our gear and waited for Ma to arrive…and we headed home.
Now, I’ve had my cats bring in mice and moles. They’ve brought birds, frogs, toads, chipmunks and squirrels in the house. I am good with all that…even if they are alive. But whatever you do…don’t put me near a snake!
I was recently given the opportunity to try L’Oreal Paris’ One Sweep Eye Shadow and Double Extend Eye Illuminator Mascara as a Bzz Agent.
I have to say, I can’t say enough about the One Sweep Eye Shadow. The uniqueness of the applicator makes layering the different colors of eye shadows extremely simple. It truly is one sweep of the applicator on the shadow color pad and then one sweep to the lids. I found there to be no problem of the applicator not fitting on my lids. The applicator’s design was a comfortable fit in hand, and to the eye, when applying.
The Double Extend Eye Illuminator Mascara was very easy to use as well. The mascara applicator is double ended…another unique design. One end supplies the under coat mascara and the other end supplies the top coat mascara. The first step is to apply the darker end you see in the picture. I did not have very good luck with my lashes not clumping together with the first step. The second step is to apply the lighter color you see on the bottom. This seemed to go on easy; however, my lashes were still clumpy. Once my daughter saw my eyes all done she said, “Mom, you’ve got glitter all around your eyes.” Followed by, “I don’t like your eyes mom.” I was really bummed she didn’t like my eyes, but she was being honest and honesty is always the best policy. I haven’t given up on the Eye Illuminator Mascara, I see myself using the bottom coat more often, and saving the top coat for special occasions, especially at night.
