Simply Essentials Baking Mat and Baking Pan Review
I simply hate baking if the preparation is too involved or the clean-up will be time consuming. I have a few non-stick pans that just – well, aren’t my favorites! So when I had the opportunity to try the Simply Essentials baking mat and pan – I thought – what do I have to lose?
About the Baking Mat
The baking mat is a non -stick silicone baking mat – similar to a silpat baking mat. You can bake on it, freeze it, refrigerate it and roast on it. It is BPA safe. The mat eliminates the need for oils, butter, cooking sprays, or parchment paper – making it a great way to save on calories. It’s made of glass weave and food grade silicone. The silicone mat fits half size baking sheets 18 x 13 inches. This mat can be used over and over.
About the Baking Pan
The baking pan is a commercial grade baking pan that measures 16 5/8 x 11 3/4 inches x .73mm thick (size of a standard cookie sheet). It is light in weight.
Our Findings
We baked a cake for a pumpkin roll in the pan – our first ever! You can see in the lower left corner the corner of the baking mat. I was a bit worried that batter would seep under the mat – but it didn’t. My next thought was – will this cake stick to the mat given the size of it.
When I took the pumpkin roll out of the oven – it needed to be immediately transferred to the confectioner sugar prepared towel. I had to release the cake from the sides of the pan – not hard to do. Then I laid the towel over the cake in the pan and turned it all over. The cake released easily from the pan. Now was the test of whether or not the mat would come off the cake easily – without destroying my cake. Guess what? It did!
Now I had the delightful chore of washing the pan set. The mat came clean without incident. There were a few spots on it where the cake had left a film behind – but that washed right off. The pan – I soaked the edges where the cake had stuck to it and let it sit for a couple minutes. I then proceeded to wash it and it washed easily.
My only complaint about the pan was that it did scratch easily (a slice of the roll was cut after it was completely done – on the pan – and that cut happened to scratch the pan). I don’t worry too much about this though – seems as though all the baking pans I’ve had scratch. That said, at least this pan has no coating that will begin to peel off – making it safer for use in the future.
The result of our pumpkin roll? Came out okay. I thought the cake was a bit dense, but we loved the cream cheese filling. We will try another recipe though 🙂
