On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, my daughter stays after school as she gets extra help in math.  Yesterday was no different, except when she was picked up by her grandmother they had to head to the mall to pick up her cousin from work. Since Grammy is unable to stand for any length of time, my daughter went in to get her cousin.  On her way to the department her cousin works in, she found a wad of bills on the floor.  She began to flip through the bills, counting $260. Without thinking twice, she told me she found a clerk on the floor and asked him what to do with this found money.  He sent her to the direction of the main customer service desk in the store.  Once there, she explained to the employee what she had found and turned the money over.  The employee took my daughter’s name and phone number and told her if no one claims this money in 90 days, she will get to keep it.When I learned of what she had done, I told her how proud of her I was and posted on my Facebook status how proud I was of her.  In doing so, a comment was left by a friend who made a suggestion on what to do in the future should a situation arise like this one.  Her suggestion was… instead of taking the money to the appropriate personnel and turning it over…give the employee your name and number and if someone were to come looking for their lost money they are to give you a call to identify your findings.  I happen to like this way better as no dishonest employee could walk off with the found money, and if no one were to claim it, then the money is yours to keep.  However, this suggestion would not be good for someone who can’t set the money aside for a period of time and may spend it before it could be identified by its owner.Regardless of which way may be the best way to handle a situation like this; right now I am very happy and proud, my daughter did what she felt was the right thing to do.
