If you’re looking for a great starter DSLR Camera – check this Canon PowerShot SX50 HS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 50x Optical IS Zoom:

We own this camera and only because my 15yo decided she wanted to get into photography.  I was like – seriously? What’s wrong with the camera you have that I bought you a year ago?  “Well Mom, it doesn’t do all the cool stuff you can with a DSLR camera.”  I was like…we’ll see…but I’m not spending a lot of money on a DSLR camera.  I also told her after she kept hounding me – that if we got her one – she’d have to take care of this camera like it was her kid.  She promised she would.

So I began to search for an inexpensive DSLR camera that would fit the bill.  That search left me more confused than anything else.  Then my sister came to visit and she was kind enough to take her niece window shopping for a camera.  After hitting a few local stores, they came back and told me that this particular camera came highly recommended.

Of course I still had to research this camera online to make sure that it was all that they said it was.  Much to my surprise (I was pleasantly surprised at that) to read so many positive reviews on many sites.  I felt the price was right too.  I didn’t want to be spending $600 – $800 on a starter camera for a 15yo!  I also learned through my research that one can buy additional filters which I thought was a plus.

Needless to say, after I compared apples to apples, I decided that I was going to purchase this bundle at Amazon.com:

Canon PowerShot SX50 HS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 50x Optical IS Zoom + NB-10L Battery + 9pc Bundle 32GB Deluxe Accessory Kit

The reason I went with this bundle was because it had so much to offer.  For $449.95 she not only got the camera which I found at the lowest price for $369 and came with a free camera bag  (which had complaints of the camera not being able to fit in the bag), but this bundle came with:
  • A bag that did secure the camera well with many pockets,
  • 2 tripods- an extendable 8″ tabletop and a 50″ with carrying case
  • Additional NB-10L Rechargeable Replacement Battery Pack
  • 32 Gigabyte SDHC Secure Digital Memory Card
  • Secure Digital USB Card Reader
  • Universal Memory Card Wallet
  • Package of LCD Screen Protectors
  • Lens Care & Cleaning Kit
  • HDMI Cable for direct connection to HDTV
  • and a BONUS!! FREE 25 Quality Prints

Frankly, my daughter has quite the set up now and she just needs to learn more about the camera’s features.  She’s really enjoying taking pictures of the moon:

She’s also beginning to learn how to blur out objects and focus in on what matters to her:

All in all, I am thrilled with the decision that I made to get this starter DSLR camera.  It takes great shots, the battery life is good, it was priced right, came with extras that would have cost me more should I have bought them all separately, and most importantly – my daughter is more than thrilled with the camera.  Now if I could only get her to rename photos and put them in folders – all would be very cool!  Oh – backing up the photos would be a nice thought too!

  1. I am not very handy with cameras and have always been told I take awful pictures so this camera has intrigued me. It looks like something I can use and take more family pictures.

  2. This is a very nice camera and I think the price is a great price. It will take so many great pictures and you will be pleased. I would love to own one of these cameras, but it is not in my budget. I did get a really nice camera for my family.

  3. This would be a great camera for my mom. She isn’t very tech savvy and always ends up spending more money for stuff she doesn’t really need or use when all she wants is to take pictures. Thanks!

    • Hi Kayla – thanks for your comment. It really is a nice camera. Even with my eyesight – when I open up that little LCD door to shoot photos with it or look at previous photos – I’m golden. I’ve got the basics down packed, and am still learning, because I have decided that she is going to have to share it with me when in need.

  4. My husband also is fan of photography and he saw the same deal on amazon but was really confused about the details ,thankyou so much it helped him a lot.

  5. Thanks so much for sharing! Nice to know there are cameras out there that will take gorgeous pics without breaking the bank! That is my next big purchase and you may have saved me some serious dough! Thanks!!!
