Ever since my daughter has known about drugs and alcohol (which comes early now-a-days), and even before taking a course her grammar school required in 5th grade called D.A.R.E
(Drug Abuse Resistance Education), I began to talk to her about the affects of drugs and alcohol. I want her to be informed. I want her to make the right choices.
Here’s a synopsis of what you can expect from this publication: “Discusses skills parents and caregivers can use to prevent illicit drug use among teens. Describes problems caused by marijuana, alcohol, and other substances; signs of drug use; and ways to enforce rules, give advice, and deal with teens caught using drugs.”

Regardless what I may do, other parents may not find it so easy to talk to their child/children. Some kids think parents don’t know anything and just won’t listen. To help parents to be able to discuss these issues with their kids The Substance Abuse and Mental Heath Services Administration puts out a publication to assist you. In fact, even though I have talked to my daughter and she’s had the D.A.R.E course, I am still going to download the PDF version to read. I want to make sure I touch all the bases on this subject with my daughter.
SAMHSA offers a choice of one being able to download the publication or order it via snail mail….both ways are FREE.

Household Dangers for Cats and Kittens
I stripped my bed today, washing all the bedding and vacuuming the mattresses. In putting it back together, I was reminded of why I had blankets covering my foot board, which led me to writing this post. I would like to share a few dangers found in the home that I now take precautions for when I have kittens, in particular; but also adult cats in my home…which is 99% of the time.
Sleeper Sofas
Have you ever thought of your couch being a hidden danger for kittens and cats? Well…it can be especially sleeper sofas. I’ve had a cat get her head/neck caught in the sleeper sofa bar, and in not knowing she was caught in it, people were sitting down on the couch which ended up killing her. It was a tragedy and I will never forget it. What had happened is she had disappeared this one day and we thought someone either stole her or an animal got her. It wasn’t until she’d been missing almost two weeks before I could smell a horrible odor near the couch. We tore the couch apart to open it up and there she was. The couch was too far-gone to be saved between the bodily fluids and the odor.
Swivel/Rocking Chairs/Recliners
Kittens and cats love to sleep wherever they fancy at the time. We are always cautious when sitting down in one of these types of chairs because we never know if one our fur babies has climbed up under or is lying on the floor underneath it. FYI – recliners are one of the top causes of deaths of ferrets.
Kitchen/Dining Room Chairs
Take a look at these chair’s back slats. They are wide at the top and then get narrower towards the bottom. I have had kittens, which naturally are learning how to climb and jump on whatever they seem to deem appropriate, that have slipped trying to get from one table to another using the chair as a go between. In doing so, they have lost their footing and have had their heads fall in between two slats – getting their necks caught between the slats as they slipped down further between the slats. The kitten is unable to get its neck out from between the slats and screams out.
I’ve had this happen to two three kittens with this type of chair. If I have any kittens around, I now cover the back of the chairs with a heavy coat or thick blanket so this will never happen again. All two three of my kittens survived as I was at home at the time to set them free. *Note these are not the exact chairs I have but are extremely similar. The slats are almost identical to mine.
Scroll Furniture
What about that scroll furniture? A hidden danger? Most certainly!! The headboard you see to the right, is my headboard. The footboard has the exact same scrolling. While lying in bed one night, a kitten we had was playing on the bed. All of a sudden I heard him scream. He had slipped into one of the scrolls and his head and neck were caught. He survived…but again, I was right there to rescue him…what if I hadn’t been?
The Clothes Washer and Dryer
Although I have never had a cat or kitten parish in either my washer or dryer; I have heard of other cat owners who have lost their fur babies from them climbing in these appliances. I have had them climb in these appliances when loading or unloading them, which has me very paranoid I might miss one climbing in, so I always double-check (the dryer in particular) before I turn it on.
Refrigerator
Yes, these little creatures love to climb in the fridge. I’ve had this happen on more than one occasion with kittens and adult cats. I actually had one shut in the fridge. She had climbed in and laid down in the back of the fridge on the bottom shelf while I was putting groceries away – I hadn’t seen her climb in. It wasn’t until I heard a cat meowing. I went searching for where the cry was coming from and there she was lying on the bottom shelf wanting out.

Are you a contact lens wearer? Have you ever considered buying your lenses online? Back 24 years ago I began wearing contact lenses. They cost me a small fortune – to the tune of over $240 for the lenses prescribed for my vision needs for a year. In my state, one must have their eyes examined once a year in order to order new lenses.
So, roughly ten years ago, I smartened up and began to purchase them online. The money I save by purchasing them online is incredible. I have yet to get a bad lens, and I have yet to have a company not follow through on sending me the correct lenses. And no, I do not buy from 1-800-Contacts for the mere fact that if I were going to pay their price, I might as well buy them at my eye doctor’s office. And if you didn’t know…if you order contacts through Walmart…they utilize 1-800-Contacts.
Here’s what I do…I do a Google search for the brand of lens the eye doctor has prescribed for me. This year it happens to be Air Optix for Astigmatism. So that is what I did my search on. I clicked many links to see which site offered the best price, including the price comparison sites.
From my research, I discovered some websites only offer 3 lenses to a box rather than the usual 6. I also discovered many sites on the Net that are the cheapest aren’t US sites. Knowing this, I came to the decision that I didn’t want to purchase from a company that wasn’t US based even though I could save even more money by utilizing on of those websites. This decision is a personal decision. I just feel if I am putting these lenses in my eyes…how do I really know what those companies have to follow for guidelines in other countries. I surely don’t want some kind of foreign bacteria getting into my eyeballs!
Anyway, after coming up with a couple of sites that offered the best prices, I then checked to see if any of the click-thru shopping sites offered cash back on purchases from those sites. I did find one, however…I figured out for what I would get for cash back by buying through this one website, I would actually make out better by buying from a website that doesn’t participate in cash back shopping. In addition, I found an online coupon code for the website I was ordering from; plus, I got free shipping! And to sweeten the deal, I also made sure to order before the time frame was up for the manufacturer’s rebate…which in my case, the manufacturer required the lenses be ordered within 90 days from the eye exam.
So when all was said and done…I purchase a years supply of contact lenses for less than $24 a box, $95.40 for a years supply. If I had purchased from 1-800-Contacts I would have doled out $199.96 in the end for a years supply. I saved myself $104.56.
I’m very happy with my savings and can’t wait to get a new set of lenses in my eyeballs :-). I guess I won’t have to wait too long. They arrived in the mail today!
